About Krister Berg

Born -62 in Piteå in a family that spent a lot of time in the mountains and in the archipelago. There the love for nature and outdoor life was born. My first leaping step as a photographer was taken in 1982 when I borrowed my family's Konica C35 compact camera for a trip to Iceland. A couple of years later, I received a Minox 35 as a gift, which I used extensively, and I took several courses in darkroom work during my student years in Uppsala in the 80s.

After the studies, my family moved to the north and we ended up in the mountain village of Saxnäs in the Southern parts of Lapland. There the photographic work took off and after a couple of years I was able to make a living from photos from mountains and outdoor life. During the 90s, I appeared countless times in Ute-magasinet (Outside magazine) and other magazines.

In 1996 I was elected to be a member of Naturfotograferna/N, (Swedish Nature Photographers Association) which was a great personal success. After 5 years in the mountains, we moved to Piteå and I was commissioned to depict southern Lapland in text and images for a book. Then followed a two-year assignment to depict the Piteälven (River of Piteå) for the project AKVA. The result was a digital slide show in a dome cinema that was seen by thousands of visitors. The following year was more and more taken up by commissioned photography. Food, industry, portraits, interiors etc. occupied most of the time. Eventually, the interest in working with this waned and the photographic company was wound up. Krister then worked with youths in the church and then also as a minister in the church of Sweden.

When the family moved to Stockholm in 2012, there were requests to show photos from the mountains in a photo club. One thing led to another and after not touching the camera for 10 years my shooting was back in full swing. Now I mainly photographed the immediate area in Stockholm and Möja in the archipelago where my wife has her roots. By boat we did many excursions among the thousands of islands. Interest in the black and white image resurfaced and I decided to concentrated once again on understanding the medium's potential but now with digital tools. With the American "mid century" photographers Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, Edward Weston, Paul Caponigro and Minor White as the main source of inspiration I started a new journey. The circle was closed. It didn't take long until success came and I was now published in the leading photographic magazines Camera Natura and British OnLandscape. On Möja, I have my own gallery (tool shed!) during the summer , where many people visit during their walks on the island. My prime occupation is as a social worker in the Church of Sweden in Stockholm and I enjoy being an amateur photographer just fine.

I am also an instructor of Za-sen meditation and if you are interested in learning more about photography and Zen, pleas follow this link.
